Women seem reluctant to get down on one knee this February 29 - with some holding out for the fairy tale proposal from the man of their dreams.

Traditionally, February 29 is the day across the world that the tables are turned and women are given free reign to make offers of marriage to men.

Otherwise known as Bachelors’ Day, men are expected to accept the proposal or pay a penalty, such as a sum of money.

In Europe, men who refused a woman’s proposal were expected to buy 12 pairs of gloves. In this way the woman could wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.
