Journalism students at University College Falmouth had the unique opportunity of broadcasting to the 40 million listeners of the BBC World Service’s popular radio show, the World Have Your Say.
The students worked closely with the production team and the presenter, Ros Atkins. They were involved in every aspect of the production of the global programme, from the editorial meeting, to booking guests and speaking live on air.
International journalism MA student Polly Fields said: “I just couldn’t believe how involved we were. We were really given the reins to produce the show and it left us all buzzing with excitement for days.”
Over the course of three days, the team broadcast live from the student bar, Gyllyngvase Beach Café and the student cafeteria.
Multi-media
Senior lecturer Charlotte Barry was instrumental in setting up the collaboration with the BBC World Service. She said: "The experience provided a marvellous opportunity for the students to use their emerging multi-media skills in a professional context. They did really well.”
The radio show relies heavily on social media to connect to its international audience. Students were able to see how multi-media tools such as Twitter , Facebook and blogs are used to research potential guests and to give the show's audience a platform to voice their opinions.
All the students who took part were enthusiastic about the experience. Andy Haden said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience even though it was extremely daunting to have my voice heard across the globe. It has changed my opinion about the incredible power of radio."
