Adele cleaned up at the Brits on a night that was shrouded in controversy as her acceptance speech was cut off.

The multi Grammy award winner was giving her acceptance speech for winning best British female and best album when host James Corden cut it short.

This prompted her to thrust her middle finger up, a gesture that was broadcast live on ITV. She later apologised and said it was not meant to offend viewers at home.

"I flung my middle finger up at the suits, not the fans. Sorry if I offended anyone but the people in suits offended me. I didn't get to complete my thank you speech."

Twenty- year old Ed Sheeran was another double winner, taking home best British male solo artist and best British breakthrough.

He built his fanbase on social media sites and scored a major hit the A-team which he recorded in a student flat.

Blur were awarded the outstanding contribution to music award, 17 years after their debut album Parklife collected four Brits.

Frontman Damon Albarn said: "It's great to have recognition for all the work and all the heartache and all the joy that's gone into this band."

The band are rumoured to be performing in Hyde Park for the closing ceremony at the Olympics this summer.
