Chelsea's European dream looks to be over as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Napoli.

The night started so well for the London club when a defensive error gifted Spaniard Juan Mata with the opening goal to give them the lead.

Napoli hit back within ten minutes through Edinson Cavani to make it 1-1 before fellow countryman Ezequiel Lavezzi fired the home side in front before half time.

He struck again in the second half to compound a heavy defeat for Villas Boas's men and leave them on the brink of an early exit.

The Chelsea manager said: "There were a couple of mistakes that against Napoli with their attacking strength will get punished. I think that the third goal was perfectly avoidable."

Elsewhere, joint favourites Real Madrid surrended a one goal lead late in the game to draw away at CSKA Moscow.

Tonight's action sees Swiss side Basel, who knocked out Manchester United in the group stages, take on German heavyweights Bayern Munich at home.

Inter Milan are also aiming to make the quarter finals as they travel to France to play Marseille.

Both games kick off at 7:45pm
