Minimum alcohol prices would have no effect on consumption, say health specialists.

The government is planning to change the way alcohol is sold in both England and Wales by introducing a minimum price.

They propose to stop retailers selling alcohol at a price below the rate of duty plus VAT, making cheap beer and spirits more expensive. For example, a can of weak lager would cost 38p and £10.71 would be the cost for a litre bottle of vodka.

Pledges made by the government regarding its carbon capture and storage plans could create over 100,000 new jobs and inject £6.5 billion a year into the UK’s economy by 2030.

The strategy, outlined by the Department of Energy and Climate Change today, claims to improve industrial growth, enhance the UK’s energy security and expects to address the issue of climate change.

Reuters

The South African President Zuma has arrived in the UK amid a torrent of insults, causing fears of a diplomatic row.

"Vile buffoon" and "sex-obsessed bigot" were among the UK headlines that have sparked controversy at the start of President Zuma's first state visit to the UK since his inauguration last May.

High on the agenda for discussions with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown are the World Cup, Zimbabwe, Education and Climate Change.
