Parkinson: donating payout to charity

Broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson has accepted libel damages of £25,000 from the Daily Mail. The payout followed an article published last year that suggested he had lied about his family background.

Parkinson, 74, was at London’s High Court for the settlement of his action against Associated Newspapers. The Daily Mail has now acknowledged that the allegations were “entirely false” and agreed to pay damages and Parkinson’s legal costs.

Forty members of staff are to lose their jobs at three of the county's best-loved papers.

They are the the West Briton, the Cornishman and the Cornish Guardian.

Devon and Cornwall Media believes the move is necessary to keep the company afloat, despite making £7m last year.

Tim Lezard, chair of the South West Trade Union Congress thinks they are looking out for their shareholders, not the readers or journalists.
