Image for Alcohol pricing 'will have no impact on binge drinking'

Minimum alcohol prices would have no effect on consumption, say health specialists.

The government is planning to change the way alcohol is sold in both England and Wales by introducing a minimum price.

They propose to stop retailers selling alcohol at a price below the rate of duty plus VAT, making cheap beer and spirits more expensive. For example, a can of weak lager would cost 38p and £10.71 would be the cost for a litre bottle of vodka.
