Pirate attacks on ships worldwide hit a seven year high and a record 1,181 hostages were taken in 2010, despite increased patrolling of the seas.

A total of 53 ships were hijacked worldwide, according to the International Maritime Bureau in Kuala Lumpur (IMB).

Somalia remained the biggest problem. Pirates operating off the country's coast account for 49 of the 53 ships captured last year.

It is the highest number since the maritime watchdog started monitoring in 1991. All together, they counted 445 pirate attacks last year, 10% more than in 2009.

Image for Players forced to take pay cut

Cornish Pirates management have informed players that those who remain at the club next season will be forced to take a pay cut.

The moves are designed to help ease the clubs financial worries.

The announcement comes just a month after a public meeting was held by the Pirates to discuss ways to compensate for a projected £650,000 budgeting shortfall.

Owner Dicky Evans revealed the plans to cut players wages in a press statement  to explain the sacking of head coach Mark Hewitt.
