Ricker: golden celebration

Reuters

Canadian Maelle Ricker has won a second gold medal for her host nation in the Winter Olympics women’s snowboard cross.

The 31-year old flew out of the gate to take an early lead in the final run and maintained her position to clinch the title.

The Vancouver resident, who finished fourth in Turin in 2006, came into the games at the top of the world cup standings.

It was an eventful final run with world champion Helen Olafsen of Norway and Olivia Nobs of Switzerland both crashing out half-way through.

The hunting of baby seals is to be stopped in Russia, the government has announced.

Russia has seen protests in 20 different cities this week in support of the ban. Valdimir Putin, Russia's Prime Minister said the trade was a “bloody industry”.

The EU is trying to prevent the killing and has proposed a ban on the sale of all seal products.

It is looking at the import, transit and export of the materials used. Its response follows European Parliament concerns that these practices have caused unwarranted suffering.
