The broadcaster Ray Gosling has been arrested on suspicion of murder after giving a mercy-killing confession

Mr Gosling, 70, is being questioned by Nottinghamshore Police over claims that he killed his former lover who was suffering from AIDS.

Police arrested the award winning broadcaster this morning, after he confessed on the BBC's Inside Out show to euthanizing the man.

During the programme Gosling explained how he and his lover made a pact to end his life if it became too painful.

Ray Gosling has refused to name the person, the date or the hospital in which the incident took place.

He said:

"I said to the doctor: 'Leave me… just for a bit,' and he went away.

"I picked up the pillow and smothered him until he was dead.

"The doctor came back and I said: 'He's gone.' Nothing more was ever said.

"When you love someone, it is difficult to see them suffer."

'No regrets'

Mr Gosling has made it clear that he is aware of the repercussions he could face. But he has maintained that there are no regrets.

Under British law assisted suicide is an illegal offence, and Mr Gosling could face prosecution.

Recently a number of high profile people have spoken out against the current euthanasia laws in the UK. Alzheimer’s sufferer Sir Terry Pratchet was the latest to do so.
