Fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who committed suicide last week, died from asphyxiation according to his post-mortem.

Westminster Coroners Court heard that the designer took his life by hanging himself in a wardrobe at his London home. The hearing lasted five minutes.

His body was found last Thursday next to a note, on the eve of his mother’s funeral.

Detective Inspector Paul Armstrong told the inquest there were no suspicious circumstances.

He presented the note found at the scene to coroner Dr Paul Knapman for further investigation.

Mr McQueen was named British designer of the year four times after 1996, and he was due to unveil his spring fashion collection in Paris at the end of the month.

At last nights Brit awards, close friend Lady Gaga paid tribute to the designer during her performance of “Telephone”.

Fellow fashion designer, Jeff Banks, described Alexander McQueen as " the unique originator".

“McQueen used fashion as a medium to make a statement.” he said.
