The murder of a policeman and two soldiers in Northern Ireland will not compromise peace efforts, a leading politician has said.
Dolores Kelly, the Social Democratic and Labour Party member for the North Policing Board, said the killers would not be allowed to tear down the province's political institutions nor destroy the police process.
A police officer was shot in the head last night as he responded to an emergency call in Craigavon, County Armagh.
This is the first killing of a police officer in Northern Ireland in over a decade. It follows the murder of two soldiers on Saturday night by the Real IRA.
Sapper Mark Quinsey, 23, and Sapper Patrick Azimkar, 21, both of 25 Field Squadron, 38 Engineer Regiment, were killed as they took a delivery of takeaway pizzas outside the Massereene Barracks in Antrim on Saturday.
Gordon Brown has expressed his disdain for the killers of a policeman and two soldiers in Northern Ireland. "The people of the province do not want a return to guns on the street," he said
He added that this could compromise the efforts that have been made to advance the peace process in the province.
